Kazakhstan: Atyrau Pilot Water Supply and Sanitation Project

The following project was approved today by the World Bank's Board:
LOAN AMOUNT: IBRD-US$16.5 million
Terms: Maturity=20 years, grace period=5 years, US dollar single currency
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project will strengthen the capacity of Vodocanal (the water and wastewater enterprise) in the City of Aytrau to provide reliable and safe drinking water and disposal of sewage in a sustainable, efficient, and environmentally responsible manner. The project is a pilot to prepare the basis for a larger, full-scale project including: (1) training in management and implementation of internationally-financed projects; (2) establishing a sound financial base for Vodocanal; (3) formulating a rationalized investment program; and (4) strengthening the operational and management capacity of Vodocanal.
