Kazakhstan: Syr Darya Control and Northern Aral Sea Phase-I Project

The following project was approved today by the World Bank's Board:

LOAN AMOUNT: IBRD - US$64.5 million equivalent
TERMS: Grace period = 5 years; Maturity = 20 years
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project will help to sustain and increase agriculture (including livestock) and fish production in the Syr Darya basin in Kazakhstan. It will also aid in securing the existence of the Northern Aral Sea (NAS) and improving the ecological/environmental conditions in the delta and around NAS leading to improved human and animal health and conservation of biodiversity.
